How Veterans Serve Our Country Beyond the Military

Veterans are people who have served in the armed forces of the United States, whether in times of war or peace. They have made sacrifices and contributions to protect our freedom and democracy. But their service does not end when they leave the military. Many veterans continue to serve our country and communities in various ways, such as:

  • Working in public service. Veterans have valuable skills and experience that make them ideal candidates for public service jobs, such as law enforcement, firefighting, emergency management, education, and health care. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, veterans made up about 31% of the federal workforce in 2020, and more than 50% of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) employees were veterans themselves.
  • Starting or growing businesses. Veterans have the entrepreneurial spirit and leadership qualities that help them succeed in the business world. They can access various resources and programs from the VA and other organizations to start or grow their own businesses, such as the Veteran Entrepreneur Portal, the Veterans Business Outreach Center, and the Boots to Business program. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, veterans owned 9.1% of all U.S. businesses in 2012, employing 5.03 million people and generating $1.14 trillion in annual revenue.
  • Volunteering in their communities. Veterans have a strong sense of civic duty and compassion that motivate them to give back to their communities. They can volunteer for various causes and organizations that align with their values and interests, such as the [American Legion], the [Veterans of Foreign Wars], the [Team Rubicon], and the [Mission Continues]. According to the [Corporation for National and Community Service], veterans volunteered at a higher rate (27.4%) than non-veterans (25.7%) in 2018, contributing 181 million hours of service worth $4.3 billion.

These are just some of the ways that veterans serve our country beyond the military. They are not only heroes, but also leaders, innovators, and helpers. They deserve our respect, gratitude, and support. Thank you, veterans, for your service and sacrifice. 🇺🇸

Our Veterans are Heroes!

We honor and pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. We are forever grateful for their selfless service and sacrifice that has helped protect our nation’s freedom and democracy.

Let us also remember the families of our veterans, who have made their own sacrifices in support of their loved ones. They have endured long separations, frequent moves, and the anxiety of knowing their loved ones are in harm’s way. We owe them our gratitude and support as well.

Veterans Day 2023

As Veterans Day 2023 approaches, we honor and pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. We are forever grateful for their selfless service and sacrifice that has helped protect our nation’s freedom and democracy.

As we remember the sacrifices of our veterans, let us also take a moment to reflect on the challenges they face upon returning home. Many veterans struggle with physical and mental health issues, homelessness, and unemployment. It is our duty as a society to support and care for our veterans, just as they have supported and cared for us.

Let us also remember the families of our veterans, who have made their own sacrifices in support of their loved ones. They have endured long separations, frequent moves, and the anxiety of knowing their loved ones are in harm’s way. We owe them our gratitude and support as well.

On this Veterans Day, let us renew our commitment to supporting our veterans and their families. Let us honor their service by working to ensure that they receive the care, benefits, and opportunities they deserve. And let us never forget the sacrifices they have made on our behalf.

Veteran’s Day 2022

On November 11, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson issued a message to his countrymen on the first Armistice Day, in which he expressed what he felt the day meant to Americans:

“A year ago today our enemies laid down their arms in accordance with an armistice which rendered them impotent to renew hostilities, and gave to the world an assured opportunity to reconstruct its shattered order and to work out in peace a new and more just set of international relations. The soldiers and people of the European Allies had fought and endured for more than four years to uphold the barrier of civilization against the aggressions of armed force. We ourselves had been in the conflict something more than a year and a half.

With splendid forgetfulness of mere personal concerns, we remodeled our industries, concentrated our financial resources, increased our agricultural output, and assembled a great army, so that at the last our power was a decisive factor in the victory. We were able to bring the vast resources, material and moral, of a great and free people to the assistance of our associates in Europe who had suffered and sacrificed without limit in the cause for which we fought.

Out of this victory there arose new possibilities of political freedom and economic concert. The war showed us the strength of great nations acting together for high purposes, and the victory of arms foretells the enduring conquests which can be made in peace when nations act justly and in furtherance of the common interests of men.

To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations.”
